A homecoming that became a movement.

Detty December grew out of the diaspora returning home for Christmas — Ghanaian, Nigerian, Caribbean, British, American — and locals turning the city up to meet them. Today it's the engine of the West African tourism calendar: a rolling three-week run of music festivals, weddings, beach parties, gallery openings, food experiences, and after-parties that don't really end until Twelfth Night.

Accra is the gravitational center. Cape Coast, Kumasi and Ada all benefit. If you've never been to Ghana, this is the loudest possible introduction — and the priciest. If you've been before, it's the season you fly back for.
